CCSJN Project Earth Garden

Project Earth Garden has been in existence in various forms since 2000. It was begun by Susan Schessler and parents of children in the religious education program. At that time they were able to provide 800 lbs of food the High Bridge Food Pantry. One of its original intentions was to develop a sense of the spirituality and Earth/earth relationship. In more recent years the garden has been identified with parishioner Anne Germino who has provided the leadership and much of the labor. The garden strives to be an organic component and demonstrate a commitment to living a sustainable way of life.

The garden is located behind the church center near the edge of the field in a deer proof compound. The crops are brought to various soup kitchens and pantries such as Elijah's Promise in New Brunswick and the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program in Somerville. Flowers are used in the church and we started taking bouquets to homebound parishioners last summer.

This 2013 crops are off to a good start with corn, French green beans, Cannellini beans, Roma Italian Flat beans, carrots, sunflowers, Long Island Cheese pumpkins, red and green peppers, yellow summer squash, zucchini, Kennebec potatoes (Maine White), butternut squash, eggplant (2 varieties-Asian and Prospera, an Italian type), bitter gourd (seed from India courtesy of Fr. Abraham), and a dwarf peach tree.
